Monkeypox Outbreak Spreads Across Africa, WHO Declares Public Health Emergency
A rapidly spreading outbreak of monkeypox has hit several countries in Africa, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency.
As of today, cases have been reported in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with fears of further spread to neighboring countries.
The WHO reports that over 500 cases have been confirmed, with at least 20 deaths attributed to the virus.
Monkeypox, a rare viral disease, causes symptoms such as fever, headache, and a characteristic rash. It is typically spread through contact with infected animals or contaminated surfaces.
Health officials are scrambling to contain the outbreak, with vaccination campaigns and public awareness initiatives underway.
The WHO has urged countries to enhance surveillance, contact tracing, and case management to prevent further spread.
This outbreak comes as the global health community is still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, raising concerns about the capacity to respond to multiple health crises simultaneously.
Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops.
